GatorLink Accounts

UF policy requires all students, faculty and staff to have a GatorLink account. Your GatorLink account provides you with access to e-mail and space for Web pages. Your GatorLink username is required to access administrative services provided by UF such as the myUFL portal, ISIS, Grade-a-Gator and many other services. User account management and support are provided by the UF Computing Help Desk at helpdesk@ufl.edu; (352) 392-HELP (4357). See http://helpdesk.ufl.edu for more information. If you are new to UF, you can sign up for your GatorLink account at www.gatorlink.ufl.edu .

The following documents should be of interest to all UF students, faculty and staff, regarding GatorLink passwords.

GatorLink E-mail

The CNS Open Systems Group maintains the campus-wide GatorLink mail server for incoming e-mail, providing e-mail addresses/in-boxes for all UF faculty, staff, and students. The Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) and the Post Office Protocol (POP) can be used by users’ e-mail programs to retrieve messages from the GatorLink e-mail server.

CNS Open Systems also provides an outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server which all campus users can use to send e-mail [smtp.ufl.edu].

Your E‑mail Address

If your GatorLink userid is “albert,” then your GatorLink e-mail address is albert@ufl.edu. If you have a CNS account and your CNS userid is “albert,” your NERSP e-mail address is albert@cns.ufl.edu. For more information, see www.cns.ufl.edu/emailaddress .

GatorLink Web Hosting

CNS’ GatorLink Web servers provide campus users the ability to publish their own Web pages to the world. All members of the UF community are eligible for Web server space on the “Plaza” server, to publish Web pages on the Internet. Plaza pages have addresses based on http://plaza.ufl.edu/yourGatorLinkUserid . For more information see http://help.gatorlink.ufl.edu/webserv.html .

Instant Messaging: Jabber

All GatorLink usernames are eligible to use the Jabber instant messenger server provided by CNS Open Systems Group. The Jabber protocol can act as a gateway to other messaging systems such as AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) or Yahoo chat. Because the Jabber protocol is open, clients have been implemented on multiple platforms. Clients are available for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux. For more information see http://docweb.cns.ufl.edu/docs/d0191 .

Usenet News

Usenet is a world-wide distributed discussion system. The CNS Open Systems Group maintains the campus-wide open-access Usenet server. This service can be accessed by connecting a news-reader (NNTP) program to usenet.ufl.edu. A GatorLink username is required to access this service from off-campus.

Departmental Web Hosting

CNS offers Web-hosting services to official University of Florida entities. These services include a virtual host for your site and access to several of our Web-related technologies. Your Website will be accessible at http://orgname.ufl.edu where orgname is the name of your organization. “Orgnames” are subject to approval by the UF Webmaster.

As part of the Web-hosting service you will have access to complementary Web technologies. These include CGI processing, a J2EE application server, and database services.

As its stewards, CNS will ensure your Web-site and its associated data through regular backup and storage procedures. For more information on CNS’s Web-hosting services, please see http://open-systems.ufl.edu/services/webhost .

E-mail Lists: LISTSERV

LISTSERV is an e-mail list-management software program which makes it easy to administer e-mail lists. It is the most time-tested and reliable e-mail list-management product on the market today. CNS runs a LISTSERV server for the UF community. As a service to our customers, CNS does not charge for running a LISTSERV list; however, there is a charge for maintaining an archive.

The topics of e-mail lists at CNS must be directly related to the instruction, research, or administrative mission of Florida’s public universities. For more information, see http://docweb.cns.ufl.edu/docs/d0099 .

Spam Blocking

We hate “spam” (junk e-mail). To help you reduce spam to your e-mail accounts, we provide spam-blocking and spam-scoring services. The CNS Open Systems Group has enabled a “spam-detection” system for every single e-mail sent to GatorLink username@ufl.edu addresses. This process gives each message a score, using asterisks (*) to “grade” each message. If a message gets a score of 5 (*****) or more asterisks, then we’re pretty certain it’s spam. Because these spam scores are now a part of the headers in your e-mail, they can be used as a sorting/screening device in certain e-mail programs. This should save you considerable time, effort and annoyance by screening out junk e-mail so you don’t have to see it. For more information, see www.cns.ufl.edu/spam .

File Backup Service

CNS Open Systems group provides the Network Storage and Archive Management (NSAM) service to support backup, archival, and space-management functions across campus and in the community. We use the IBM product Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) to provide this service. The NSAM includes automatic daily remote copy of backup data to an offsite facility in Atlanta. For more information, see http://open-systems.ufl.edu/services/NSAM .
