Security Services

CNS houses the UF Office of Information Security Management (UF ISM). This office sets and monitors campus– and department–wide security standards. This includes policies, procedures, and standards; awareness, education, and training; incident prevention and response; and monitoring. See the UF Information Security home page for more information.

  • The UF Information Technology (IT) Security Policy and accompanying Procedures are designed to protect data, network and other IT resources. The security policy is online at www.it.ufl.edu/policies/security .

  • The UF Acceptable Use Policy — The University of Florida has established an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for use of information technology. All users are responsible for following its guidelines. The AUP is available online at www.it.ufl.edu/policies .

  • Staying Legal: Computer Crimes Act — Unauthorized use of computing facilities is a crime under the Florida Computer Crimes Act (Chapter 815, Florida Statutes). In most instances, the crime identified constitutes a felony. Under UF policy, computer crime will be investigated by the UF Police, not by the Student Conduct Office. The Computer Crimes Act is reprinted in the CNS DOCWEB document D0010, General Information: Florida Computer Crimes Act. We recommend that you read this information.

  • Copyright Laws — CNS supports the software copyright protection policies of the institutions that use CNS services. At the University of Florida, all faculty, staff, and students are required and expected to obey the laws and legal agreements governing software use. Failure to do so can lead to monetary damages and/or criminal penalties for the individual violator. Because such violations are also against university policies and rules, disciplinary action will be taken as appropriate. The UF Software Copyright Policy, Guidelines and Training Materials may be found at www.it.ufl.edu/resources/copyright .

  • Privacy Laws — New federal and state legislation protecting identity, financial, health, and other private information is on the increase. Significant fines and penalties may be levied against institutions that expose private data. To learn more about your responsibilities to protect private data, visit http://privacy.health.ufl.edu .

Education, Awareness, and Training

  • Events and Workshops are scheduled regularly on security guidelines, incident-response procedures, and ways to keep your workstation and network secure. See http://infosec.ufl.edu/events .

  • IT Security Awareness Day — ITSA Day is the UF IT Security Team’s annual conference to promote IT Security Awareness to IT workers. See www.itsa.ufl.edu .

This page contains instructions on how to determine the true source of an e-mail and how to find who to contact to prevent further spam from that address. See http://infosec.ufl.edu/athome/spam.shtml .

  • Security Guidelines for Network Administrators is a straightforward list of what issues should be considered when administering a subnet at UF. See http://infosec.ufl.edu/admins/guidelines.shtml .

  • Data and Privacy Protection — Users will find helpful information and security tips to protect their data and privacy at https://infosec.ufl.edu/athome .
