Telecommunications

Everyone needs telephones. Telecommunications provides communication services for more than 15,000 lines for faculty and staff. We focus on customers’ needs and continually seek to add value for our services.

CNS provides a variety of telephone and communication services. We are always updating our service to utilize the newest and most-efficient technologies. We offer regular line phones from BellSouth through our Centrex system and support for departmental key systems. Long-distance service is through the State system or other dedicated carriers. Phones and the Internet are merged with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones. We also provide services for campus Blue Light (emergency) phones, Alarms, and Elevator phones. Trouble Reports and Service Requests can be called in at 352-273-1234 or submitted online at www.cns.ufl.edu/telecom . This is also the site for more information about telephone services.

Voice over IP (VoIP)

The UF campus is in the process of installing voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) phones campus-wide. VoIP represents a new method of providing telephone service. Historically, telephone systems have used dedicated equipment to provide only telephone service. The equipment includes telephone switches, circuits to connect the switches, telephone sets, and so forth. Rather than using dedicated equipment, IP Telephony will use much of the same infrastructure as a data network. It will achieve this by converting sound into small packets of data and transporting them via the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) between telephone sets. The VoIP service is part of the “services-to-wallplate” model that is offered by CNS Network Services and is designed to ultimately provide an enterprise communications solution for the University of Florida.
