CNS provides a bulk data transfer service. This service lets you transfer large amounts of data between the CNS mainframe and personal computers.
If you wish to use this service, you must initiate a request in one of the following ways:
Fill out the request form in this document. You can also get a blank form from the CNS Support Desk.
Fill out an electronic request and e-mail it to us (send the e-mail to ARNETTE@NERSP.CNS.UFL.EDU).
Phone the request in.
The following mainframe media are acceptable:
3480 cartridge
OS data set
The following PC media are acceptable:
1.44M diskette
CD-ROM
The PC media must be clearly marked with your name, phone number, address, CNS account number, and a unique volume serial number assigned by you. We suggest using your initials and three numbers (for example, JVA001) for keeping track of your media.
You must provide us with the proper access information (i.e., correct tape volume serial number, data set name, account number, etc.) or the job will be aborted and you will still be assessed the job setup charge.
The charge for this service is $10 for each job setup that we must create. One job setup can transfer one or several files. You must provide all physical media needed, such as tapes and diskettes. If we have to mount more than one physical output item, there will be an additional charge of $1 for each extra item mounted. Any special cases will be handled as consulting at a flat rate of $35 per hour with a one hour minimum.
If you are transfering files to or from a tape that is already in CNS's Tape Management System (TMS), you need to provide only the volume serial, the name of the file, and other label information.
EXAMPLE: If you have a large file on cartride tape that you want to transfer to five 1.44MB diskettes, the charge will be $14 ($10 for initial setup plus $4 for four extra diskettes). You must provide the input tape (if it is not already in TMS) and the five diskettes.
We would appreciate your comments and suggestions about this service. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jim Arnette at 352/392-2061, electronic mail jarnette@ufl.edu.
