Obtaining "Hit" Counts for Your CNS WWW Page

CNS Document ID: D0130
Last Updated: 12/03/2007

Abstract

This document describes how you can obtain "hit" counts for pages that are stored on the NERSP system. It assumes you have familiarity with UNIX and already know how to create and store Web pages on the NERSP system.

Introduction

CNS hosts Web pages for many departments and offices at UF, as well as for several non-UF user-groups. As a service to these users, we provide "pre-digested" Web hit-count stats, as well as other useful and interesting information about our Web servers.

You can view a variety of statistics, for example: how many hits a Web page receives, who is accessing the pages and from what site.

If you want to learn how to set up Web pages on the NERSP, please see D0122, Putting Your World Wide Web Pages on CNS.

Virtual Web Servers on NERSP

The NERSP complex is host to many "virtual Web servers," including "nersp.cns.ufl.edu", "www.ufl.edu", "plaza.ufl.edu", and many more. Daily logs are maintaned for each of these virtual web servers. Nightly, the CNS Open Systems Group runs the analog utility, which writes out analyses of the activity of each virtual Web server.

Summary Data Available

Daily and Monthly summary statistics are available for each of the virtual Web servers hosted on the NERSP complex.

  • Daily files are named daily-yyyy-mm-dd.html; for example, the daily file for January 23, 2003 is named

    daily-2003-01-23.html

  • Monthly files are named monthly-yyyy-mm.html; for example, the monthly file for June 2003 is named

    monthly-2003-06.html

Within each file you will find both numerical-table statistics, and graphical charts for a wide range of information regarding the Web pages hosted on that server.

The "Go To:..." header section at the top of each page provides a quick-link index to the various tables and charts. The link to the section on number-of-hits for individual pages is the last one in the "Go To..." header: "Request Report." The Request Report section lists all files which have received at least 20 requests during that reporting period (day, or month, according to the type of report).

Other Data

In addition to simple hit-counts, the Web Server Statistics pages list a variety of other potentially useful data, including:

  • Requesting Hosts: Top 50

  • Redirected Requests: Top 20

  • Referring Sites: Top 30

  • Referring URLs: Top 100

  • Search Query Report: Top 30

  • Browser Summary: Top 20 Browsers used to access this site

  • Operating System Report: Operating Systems used by browsers accessing this site

  • And others.

Accessing the Reports

To access a report, decide which report you would like to see; which particular day or month. Then, using the templates given above in the section headed "Summary Data Available," use your Web browser to view:

http://webstats.ufl.edu/virtualhost/timeperiod.html

In place of virtualhost, enter the base URL for the virtual host on which your pages reside. And in place of timeperiod, enter the daily-yyyy-mm-dd or monthly-yyyy-mm for the time-period desired. For example, for the June 14 statistics for Web page http://nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu/~spock/index.html, you would enter

http://webstats.ufl.edu/nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu/daily-2003-06-14.html

To view statistics for the entire month (June 2003) for that page, you would go to

http://webstats.ufl.edu/nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu/monthly-2003-06.html

Report Generation Schedule

Daily reports should be available no later than 48 hours after the end of the day in question.

Monthly reports should be available no later than 15 days after the end of the month.

If the normal reporting period has passed, and the report you are looking for is still not available, please e-mail open-systems-l@lists.ufl.edu.
