Orientation--The Parts That Make Up The Big Picture

The following graphic shows the GatorLink WebMail main Message List page, with various sections labeled with numbers for easier reference.

In this section, we will briefly look at the major features, options, commands, and controls found on this page. Detailed descriptions and instructions for use of many of the items will be given in later sections of this document.

1: Banner Section

This top-most section of the page displays the GatorLink WebMail "Web Mail" logo, the version number, UF Wordmark, and the message "Logged in as your name."

This banner appears on all GatorLink WebMail pages by default, but you can turn it off via the "View" section of the "Preferences" page.

2: Top Menu

This provides access to GatorLink WebMail's primary commands/features.

3: Folder Info

This dark-blue bar tells you three things:

  1. What folder you're currently viewing ("INBOX" in this example)

  2. How many unread messages are in the current folder ("11" in this example)

  3. How many total messages are in the current folder ("100" in this example.

4: Message-List Options/Operations: List Navigation; Filtering, Copying and Deleting Multiple Messages

This light-blue bar contains controls which let you select which messages you want to view. It also has controls to let you easily delete groups of messages, or to move or copy messages to other folders.

5: List Header, Message Selection and Sorting Controls

This area of the page contains column headers for the list of messages: Flags, Sender, Subject, Date, Size. It also contains an unlabeled "Check All/Clear All" control, immediately to the left of the "Flags" label (also note the Check All / Clear All controls at bottom of the list of messages).

In addition to labeling the columns of the message list, the column-headers (Flags, Sender, Subject, Date, Size) in this list are also clickable controls which allow you to sort the list by any of the headers displayed. See "Sorting The List" (below) for more information.

6: Message Flags/Status Indicators

Under the Flags header of the message list, you may see any of several little icons to the left of a message. These icons are indicators to tell you certain "meta" information regarding the message. You do not need to try to remember them; simply hovering (without clicking) your mouse-pointer over any of the Flags icons will reveal a "tool-tip" text-box which will tell you the meaning of that flag. We present them here only for the sake of general orientation.

Attachment: This message has one or more attachments

Flagged: This message has been flagged as "important." Note that while GatorLink WebMail (currently) has no facilities to allow you to flag a message as "important," many stand-alone e-mail programs do. If you have flagged a message as "important" using a stand-alone e-mail program, the message will display this flag-icon in GatorLink WebMail.

Recent: This message has arrived since the last time you checked your e-mail with GatorLink WebMail

Replied: You have replied to this message

Junk: This message as been flagged as probably being "Spam"

In addition to the icon-indicators, GatorLink WebMail indicates whether or not you have read each message, by presenting UN-read messages in 'heavy'/bold type, and messages which you have read in a lighter typeface.

7: Folder-Selection/Management & Storage Management Menu

This panel displays a list of all of your (subscribed) folders, and allows you to select which folder you would like to view. It also contains controls to let you add or delete folders, subscribe/unsubscribe to folders, empty the current folder, or empty your Trash.

It also displays information regarding how much of your current space allocation you have used. For more information, please see the GatorLink E-mail QUOTA (Storage Limit) section in the "Folders" chapter of this document.

Note

The [Add/Edit/Delete] option under the folder list is identical with "Edit Folders" option in Top Menu
