Abstract
Some departments, under special circumstances, provide CNS Dial-Up Accounts for their employees.
This document provides instructions on how to request the appropriate type of account, and how to switch your PC from using a GatorLink dial-up account (which is billed to the individual) to a CNS Dial-Up Account (which will be billed to your department).

Many faculty and staff members continue to have a need for dial-up Internet access to fulfill their job duties. In such cases, it may be appropriate for your department to establish a CNS Dial-Up Account you can use, that will be billed to the department.
This document provides instructions on how to request the appropriate type of account, and how to switch your PC from using a GatorLink dial-up account (which is billed to the individual) to a CNS Account, which is billed to your department.
There are two types of dial-up account available at UF:
GatorLink Dial-Up Account
CNS Dial-Up Account
Effective 7/1/2006, UF will charge for use of the GatorLink dial-up service. Prior to that date, students, faculty, and staff were granted a no-charge monthly dial-up allotment as a feature of their GatorLink account.
We encourage existing dial-up users to consider DSL or cable modem service as the most convenient and effective means to work on the Internet from home. For users with only a modest need for Internet access, many alternative dial-up service providers offer feature-rich services at low prices. Combined with Virtual Private Networking (VPN) technology, these third-party services can provide you with the same functionality that you are accustomed to having from GatorLink dial-up service, including access to restricted resources that are only available to UF-based Internet addresses.
GatorLink Dial-Up Accounts Are Billed to Individual Users. Effective 7/1/2006, you may still use your GatorLink username and password to log on to the UF dial-up Internet service as you have in the past. The individual person associated with the GatorLink account will receive a $5.00 base charge for each (calendar) month in which they use their GatorLink account to access dial-up service. This $5.00 provides you with a base package of 3,600 minutes (60 hours) of dial-up time for that month. Additional minutes (beyond the 3,600 base) are charged at the rate of $0.0083 per minute (approximately 50 cents per hour). This is NOT a "subscription-model" charge; you will not be charged for any month in which you use no dial-up minutes. "Unused minutes" do NOT "roll over" to following months, nor will charges be prorated if fewer than the 3,600 minutes are used.
Those rates are for "local" dial-up only. Dial-up to the "toll-free" (1-800-217-4096) lines is billed to GatorLink accounts at $0.083 per minute (approximately $5.00/hour). Toll-free dial-up is not included in the 3,600 minutes provided in the base $5.00 package. Toll-free dial-up charges are in addition to the $5.00 base package, and charging for toll-free dial-up begins with the first minute of use.
Users considering continued, long-term use of GatorLink dial-up services should be aware that the service is under review, and there is a possibility that it may be discontinued at or shortly after the end of calendar year 2006.
CNS Dial-Up Accounts Are Billed to Departments. Many faculty and staff members continue to have a need for dial-up Internet access. If your dial-up use is required for your job duties, then it may be appropriate for your department to pay for your dial-up access.
CNS dial-up charges are structured somewhat differently than GatorLink charges, and it is important that departments understand these charges before they approve creation of an account (and assume responsibility for the charges to that account).
CNS accounts are billed for dial-up Internet access by-the-minute, beginning with the first minute of the connection. There is no "base allocation" as there is in GatorLink. The benefit of this is that departments are only billed for the actual usage, at $0.0083 per minute (approximately 50 cents per hour).
CNS' minimum charge per (monthly) invoice is $5.00; however, that is per account, not per userid; multiple userids may be billed on a single account. CNS Accounting can assist your department in setting up accounts and userids to take best advantage of the billing structure.
Following is the procedure to obtain a departmentally-funded CNS dial-up account.
Obtain approval of the dean, director, department head, or other individual with authority to approve purchases/charges.
Ask the CNS Account Manager for your unit to create a CNS userid for you.
If your unit does not have anyone authorized to create CNS userids, have the person in your unit who handles Fiscal/Purchasing matters contact CNS Accounting (352-392-2061) to get "a CNS computer userid" created. If the department already has an account open with CNS, your new userid can be added to the existing account. Otherwise, CNS Accounting will assist in setting up a new account.
If you have general questions about the process of setting
up a CNS userid or account, or if you are unable to locate an
appropriate individual within your department to assist you in
creating a new CNS userid or account, please contact CNS
Accounting at <cnsbill@cns.ufl.edu>.
Your unit CNS Account Manager, or CNS Accounting, will create the userid, and tell you the username and initial password.
Decide what you want your new CNS password to be. You will be required to change the initial password assigned by the userid creator the first time you use your new CNS userid. For information on CNS passwords, please see the CNS Password Information Center.
Go to a computer which you will use for dial-up access. In all likelihood it already has a GatorLink Dial-Up Connection icon set up on it. You can use the same connection for CNS dial-up, with 2 simple changes:
Double-click on the GatorLink Dial-Up Icon

Change the User name: field from your GatorLink username to your new CNS username.
Do NOT put a "/i" after your
CNS username! Just enter your CNS username without anything
extra.
The initial (temporary) password which was assigned at the
time the userid was created is "pre-expired." This is to force
you to change it to something that only you
know. Change the Password: field so that it
contains your initial (temporary) CNS password (as given to you
when the userid was created) followed by a "slash" (
/ ), then your new CNS password, followed by another
"slash" ( / ), followed finally by your
new CNS password (again). Your new password must be entered
twice to ensure against mistypings.
temporaryPassword/NewPassword/NewPassword
Do NOT change the telephone number in this panel! CNS userids use the same telephone number as GatorLink userids, so this should not be changed, if you are converting from GatorLink to CNS dial-up.
Then click the Dial button.
Your computer should dial in and connect using your new CNS userid exactly as it did with your GatorLink userid.
Once you have connected, confirm that your connection is working correctly by checking your e-mail, or going to a frequently-changing Web page, such as a news page (CNN.COM, or any such page). That way you will be able to know for sure that you have a good connection, and are not just reading files out of your computer's cache of old data.
Disconnect your dial-up session.
Again, double-click on your Dial-Up connection icon. This time, change the Password: field so that it contains ONLY your new CNS password.
If you have questions regarding the procedure for setting up a new
CNS userid/account, please contact the CNS Accounting office at
<cnsbill@cns.ufl.edu> (telephone 352.392-2061).
