GatorLink Email Service Enhancements

We are in the process of making changes to the GatorLink email service and to GatorLink WebMail, our web-based email client that many of you use to access your GatorLink mailbox. These changes are a direct result of responses to the Student Government (SG) Webmail Survey many of you responded to Fall semester. We'd like to thank the SG Webmail Committee for working with us to help us improve the GatorLink email service.

Changes made during the 2007 spring/Summer semester break include a default junk mail filter, auto-purging of Trash and Junk folders containing messages over 30 days old, and the discontinuance of the dual quota system that maintained separate quotas for your INBOX and Trash folders.

Junk Mail Filter

A junk mail filter has been installed for all mailboxes that do not have an existing filter. If you do not want the default junk filter applied to your mailbox you can go to the webmail preferences page and configure a filter for your mailbox.

To do this, log into GatorLink WebMail (http://webmail.ufl.edu) with your GatorLink userid and password and select Preferences from the bar at the top of the screen. Scroll to the "Junk Mail" section and set a threshold value and put a check next to "Auto Filter Junk Mail."

When checked, messages with a junk score higher than the threshold you set will be moved into the Junk folder.

If the Junk folder doesn't exist it will be created for you. Enabling this will also affect message delivery in stand alone email clients.

Auto Deletion of Trash and Junk Messages

Messages delivered more than 30 days ago that are currently under your Trash or Junk folders will be automatically deleted by the server. This includes all subfolders to the Trash or Junk folders. Messages in any other folder (not under Trash or Junk) *will not* be automatically purged.

The age of a message is counted beginning from when it is first delivered to your mailbox. So, if you move an old message from your INBOX into your Trash folder, it may be purged without having been in your Trash folder for 30 days. If you have any messages in your Trash or Junk folders that you wish to keep, you will need to move them into another folder.

Discontinuing the Dual Quota System

Your separate Trash and INBOX quotas have been combined into a single quota for all folders in your mailbox. Any figures on your space usage will refer to the sum of all folders in your mailbox. This will include your Trash and Junk folders.

We will be closely watching the effects of these changes on your email experience. We are happy to be making these changes based on your requests as we want to make the GatorLink service as pleasant to use for faculty, staff, and students as we can.
