On Tuesday, June 30, 2009, the CNS printer service will be discontinued.
In recent years, usage of this service has decreased sharply as more and more of our customers have turned to local printing solutions. The volume of use has declined so much that we can no longer justify supporting the cost of a service that is mostly unused.
Output and/or files that have been printed to our printers can still be printed. You will need to direct the output to a local (to your department or college) networked office printer.
CNS provides an LPR gateway service which allows you to use a networked printer in your office to route output from any of CNS's NERMVS systems. The destination printers can be directly attached to the Internet, or attached to any host which natively speaks the LPR protocol, or attached to any LAN which has an LPR server gateway.
If you are interested in using the LPR gateway service, contact your system administrator. If you are the system administrator for your department, you may wish to read our document, D0105, LPR: Routing Print to the Internet at http://docweb.cns.ufl.edu/docs/d0105/d0105.html . You can also review the CNS LPR-delivery Printer Definition Request Form at http://nersp.cns.ufl.edu/cgi-bin/tevp-request .
If you have any questions or concerns about this scheduled service removal, please contact Bill Carr, CNS Operations Manager. He will be happy to talk to you.
