TPX, Easytrieve & Panvalet to be Removed 08/01/2009

On Saturday, August 1, 2009, TPX, Easytrieve, and Panvalet software products will no longer be available on the CNS z/OS system.

We first mentioned our intention to remove these products in a September 2008 article in /Update. At that time, we explained that rising costs had caused us to review our mainframe software to select which items could be discontinued with minimal impact on our customers. The selected products were TPX, Easytrieve, and Panvalet.

Events that led to this decision began in 2008 when we upgraded the CNS IBM mainframe system to meet the growing needs of the university. Due to contract terms from when the computer was purchased in 2006, there were no 2008 costs to upgrade the hardware system components.

However, because much mainframe software is licensed on the basis of the processing capacity of the machine, some of our vendors imposed significant price increases. CNS negotiated aggressively to minimize these increases but the net effect was still a higher software cost. We are removing these three software products to bring costs back down to near previous levels, and avoid needing to pass increased costs to our customers.

Our z/OS system staff has been working with the largest identifiable users of these products to help them successfully migrate to other tools.
