"Relaying Denied" E-Mail Error Message

Note

Users considering using the UF/CNS dial-up service should be aware that this service is under review, and may possibly be discontinued at or shortly after the end of calendar year 2006. For more information, please see Dr. Hoit's memo to Deans, Directors and Department Heads of 05/02/2006, titled Charging for UF Dialup Services.

Q:

I have a problem sending a message outside the ufl.edu domain space. Receiving is OK, and sending an e-mail inside UF is also OK. But, whenever I send a message outside UF (from home or from the UF campus), I get the following error message: Relaying denied. Can you please help me or direct me to the correct person for assistance? (CGH)

A:

If you are having this problem on campus and at home, it sounds like you have two different problems. Try the following suggestions:

  1. Check with the network administrator for your department. Ask him or her to check to see if there is a valid reverse within ufl.edu for the IP address (campus computer) you were using.

  2. When you go home, if you are dialing up with GatorLink, check to see if you are using SMTP.UFL.EDU as your outgoing mail address. In November 2001, we stopped allowing variations of SMTP.UFL.EDU and required the outgoing mail server to be exactly specified as SMTP.UFL.EDU.

  3. One of our security rules is that the SMTP server (outgoing mail) you use must match your Internet service provider. This means that if you dial up using AOL or Earthlink or some other Internet provider, the SMTP server you use must come from the company who provides your dial-up connection. If you are dialing up with some other company (not UF) but using SMTP.UFL.EDU as your outgoing mail server, this would explain why you are getting a Relaying denied message. Call your service provider and get the correct SMTP address that you should use. Regardless of your Internet provider, it is OK to use a UF incoming mail address. It is just the outgoing server that must match your Internet service provider.

If you have any trouble making changes to your home configuration, please call the UF Computing Help Desk at (352) 392-4357. Their consultants are trained to assist you. (tlvh)
