Sheard Goodwin recently submitted an article titled Documentation: What's it good for? An overview of the University of Florida's success for publication in the newsletter of the BICSI (Building Industry Consulting Service International). The article was not only accepted, it made the BICSI News July/August 2009 cover story.
“In May 2002, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) published ANSI/TIA/EIA-606-A, Administration Standard for the Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure. That document established a framework for labeling and documenting telecommuncations infrastructures, ranging from a small business building up to a large multicampus environment.”
Goodwin's article begins with the industry standard and describes the huge task undertaken by CNS staff to document UF's sprawling systems to that standard. Despite general skepticism that such efforts would be worthwhile, Goodwin has been able to demonstrate the bottom-line efficiency of having complete knowledge of telecommunications outlet and connector locations to accurate billing for network services and as an incentive to potential data center customers.
